Savvy Giving by Design: Joseph

It’s been awhile since I’ve posted in here and for many reasons! Not only have we been busy busy busy at The Guest House Studio with our rockstar clients but, we’ve also been busy working hard to get the Charleston Chapter of Savvy Giving by Design up and running! Being involved with Savvy has been the most rewarding thing for me. To use my expertise, skills, and connections to make a positive impact to our community brings me so much joy. In case you haven’t hear of Savvy Giving by Design, it is a non-profit, national network of professional interior designers whose mission it is to provide comfort, support, and healing to families with a child facing a medical crisis by transforming the interior spaces of their homes at no cost to them. Pretty cool huh?

Recently we had our first Charleston room reveal for the special, Joseph Greene and his brother Jacob. Joseph was born with Hypo - plastic left Heart Syndrome which affects the normal blood flow to the heart. Since he was born he has undergone multiple procedures for this syndrome but unfortunately this disease is a lifelong disease.   The overall survival probability of children with single ventricle anatomy and staged surgical intervention has increased significantly over the past several decades but despite this the lifelong complications impact health and potential for liver fibrosis, fontal failure, and the need for a heart transplant.  Due to Joseph's syndrome, when he got a bacterial virus he developed a brain abscess and had a stroke last year at the age of 12.

He's underwent  a craniotomy for left frontal abscess evacuation in 2018 but now suffers from low normal RV systolic function, trivial AV valve regurgitation, liver fibrosis, anxiety, PTSD and severe depression.   Therefore, having a space that was relaxing, organized, and FUN to be in was key for his room makeover.

I mean, look at that face! The family rents their home so we decided to make the most impact in the furnishings and paint the walls. Joseph wanted a grey and teal bedroom. He loves art and we all know that art is great for releasing anxiety and finding a place for all those feelings! We chose to soft, plush furnishings with lots of texture for Joseph and then added in some great local art pieces that were generously donated from some Charleston artists. The rooms turned out so great and the boys loved their new spaces!
