As the seasons change, so do our moods, routines, and the way we live in our homes. I love changing out my decor to match the seasons. It’s about creating a space that feels harmonious with the time of year; cozy in the winter, breezy in the summer, and full of life everyday in between. With little storage space at my home I have found there are simple minimal ways to avoid the clutter of a lot of seasonal decor in your storage unit while still transforming my home to match the season. Don’t misunderstand, I still have a bin of items for probably every season that I rotate but the changes while minimal make quite the impact.

tips on the art of seasonal decorating

  1. Switch out your Photos -
Buy frames for your walls or tables that are neutral, elegant, and timeless. That makes it easier to switch out the photos in them seasonally. You don’t have to switch them all out, but just choose a few of them. For example, the frame on my foyer console table is constantly rotating between a photo of my kids at Halloween, Christmas, Easter, and at the beach. Then I may choose one in my bedroom and 1 or 2 frames I have on the collage wall.

  2. Switch out your candles -
Scent is a powerful thing. It can be uplifting, it can evoke a memory, and it can adjust your mood. Buy candles that match the season. You can maintain the same location they live at in your home, just swap them out by the season.

  3. Switch out your throw pillows and blankets -
Avoid buying the cheap pillows every year or season from Target. Invest in a pillow insert that is the perfect size for you sofa, chair, or bed. Then you can buy pillow covers and rotate them throughout the year. They are easy to store and will save you money in the long run. I switch out the pillows in my living room, the lumbar on my bed, and even my throw blankets.

  4. Switch out your Wall Art -
If you have ample storage space you can buy Giclee’s and swap them out throughout the season. If you have prints that are in frames, those are much easier to swap out (unless they’ve been custom framed). Pick just a few places to do this. For example, the piece above your fireplace, one of the prints in your bedroom, or on a collage wall. Don’t choose gaudy things that say “Happy Halloween” but focus on choosing a scene that feels like the season. Landscape scenes, varying color palettes, and Still Life’s are popular choices for me.

  5. Location and Properly scaled decor -
Console tables and Bookshelves for me are the two main areas that I am swapping decor out in my home seasonally. These are the areas that make the most impact in my home where I can use a mix of varying scale decor that matches the season by either color or theme. For example, on the console table in my living room, I am seasonally swapping out my decorative cocktail books, a single larger accessory, and maybe a smaller accessory. Then I’m swapping out the photo in my photo frame but the frame stays the same. Avoid the smaller gaudy accessories that maybe you bought because it was cheap but it’s so cheap you hate it come the following year. Pay a little bit more to get something you love that it gives you joy every year when you break it out of its bin and you get to see it again for a few months.
